Josie Maran Eye Love You Palette Review and Swatches

I saw this palette first I think a year ago, but didn't buy it, and then I think it disappeared from the Sephora and Josie Maran websites, and I was disappointed I didn't get it.  It finally popped back up at Sephora in the spring and it was only $31.50, so I decided to pick it up during the Sephora Chic Week sale in the spring.  It says it is limited edition on the Sephora website.

The packaging for this palette is pretty nice.  The drawings of feathers on the top of the case have little hearts at the tips!  The case is a sturdy, but not really heavy plastic.  There is a large mirror that spans the length of the palette.  It seems quite travel friendly.

The eyeshadows themselves are a mixed bag pigment-wise.  The 3 lightest colors are quite sheer, but the other 5 have decent pigmentation, and the darkest colors make good powder eyeliners as well as eyeshadows.

Swatches without primer:

indoor light

natural light

flash

Top row of colors:
sheer shimmery cream white---makes a nice cool-toned highlighter
VERY sheer shimmery light silver grey---I can't get this to show up at all
somewhat sheer shimmery champagne---makes a nice warm-toned highlighter
well pigmented dark burgundy that leans a little brown

Swatches over primer:

natural light

Bottom row of colors:
     decently pigmented shimmery pink---quite pretty
decently pigmented dark lavender purple---also quite pretty
well pigmented slightly shimmery navy blue
highly pigmented matte black with tiny silver sparkles---excellent as liner

Swatches over primer:

natural light

These shadows definitely perform better over a primer and/or sticky base.  All but the dark blue and black sheer out quite a bit during blending without a base/primer of some sort.

The texture of these are fairly soft and nice and not stiff or chalky.  They seem similar to MAC shadows texture-wise.

They wear about as long as most shadows, with some creasing on me after about 4 hours without a primer, but last all day with one.

My least favorite color is obviously the silvery grey that won't show up no matter what.  I was hoping it was going to be a cool, dove grey.

Overall, I like this palette, but I don't think it is a must have.  This line does have other eyeshadow sets called Argan Beautiful Eyes that may have a different formula, and I've read good things about them.

Have you tried any Josie Maran eyeshadows?

  1. What do you use as a primer?

  2. I use Urban Decay's Primer Potion, although I have been trying out NARS Smudgeproof Primer. I use a NYX Jumbo pencil as a base to make the colors brighter. You can also use concealer or foundation as primer on the eyelid, but I find the Urban Decay to work best for me.
    Thanks for the question!
